Literature Text

For several thousand years, life on the planet of Kalendros was a notably peaceful one. The dominant sentient beings of the planet, the Selden, were herbivore, and avoided conflict amongst themselves as much as possible. A peculiar trait among a small percentage of the population was a minimal ability to understand and control plants and similar life forms with their will alone, thus making them exceptional farmers to fit their own needs. This unique ability, combined with the naturally fertile lands located throughout most of the planet’s surface, meant that the Selden were a remarkably peaceful race, settling down in small communities where they would practice their own agriculture and rarely engaged each other save for resource trading. In fact, even as they slowly left their tribal communities and gained technological advances the Selden never quite abandoned their rural origins: their buildings were built in harmony with the trees and plants, and the technological advances were mostly oriented towards their own health and agriculture.

Curiously, while mostly independent from each other the various communities of the Selden slowly began to form their own shamanistic cult followings, based on their unique link with nature as well as the presence of the “touched ones”, the Selden endowed with the gift to manipulate and communicate with the plants. Curiously, while formed independently from each other and possessing different codes of conduct, all of the religions seemed to direct their prayers to one single female deity: “Mother”.

While peaceful, there were often conflicts and disputes among the Selden over minor facts. Still, the vast majority learned to live with their own differences and co-exist. Their own self-absorption and lack of motivation to search out for life beyond the stars meant that the Selden would have likely stood still in their own evolution for centuries.

Until the Forgotten appeared, catching the civilizations by surprise and stirring them to react to this unforeseen foe.

Their peaceful ways were forgotten, and funds were diverted to be invested into weapons and warfare. With the possibility to assimilate the Forgotten’s own powers the native ability to treat over plants was set aside. Slowly, but surely, their shamanistic culture began to waver. Nowadays, at their darkest hour, the only remains of their great civilization are the small chapels dedicated to the goddess as well as the few Beings who still practice their ancestor’s powers…
Well... this was originally the intro for chapter 2 of The Forgotten. Sadly, however, college has really grabbed me right now, and its taking me longer than I thought to finish writing and proofreading the next part. So, to let you guys into more of the setting as well as letting you know that I am not dead (yet), I'm submitting this instead.

Isn't it sad how such a peaceful and contemplative civilization suddenly had to change its entire culture because of the circumstances placed upon it?

UPDATE: Chapter 2 is done and submitted!! Look it up there, folks.
